Artisan Bindery
Save the Children Visitors Book unveiled at Palace.
In June I was asked by a collector of Fine Bindings who is based in London if I would take on a commission for a charity he supports, with regard to making a design bound visitors book. Naturally, when I heard the words design and commission in the same sentence I said yes without hesitation. Up until this point all the design bindings I had done were for limited edition and private press books, so it was refreshing to do a design for a book that had blank pages. The book is to surface three times a year and be a permanent record of all those who attend the fund raising functions at Buckingham Palace for the next 90 years.
The commission was certainly a challenge given the size (approx. 12x18x5 inches landscape), but most satisfying. It has opened me up to the idea of doing bespoke design bindings for any type of book. The design aspect of bookbinding has been liberated.
