Caroline Johnson arrives in the gallery

Caroline Johnson was born during one of the worst winters on record and brought up on a post-war housing estate. Archived drawings from the age of five already show a keen eye for detail- such as washing on a line and fluff under a bed. Caroline studied at Preston, Falmouth and the Central College of Art.

Her work leans toward the urban, industrial and architectural, yet she's equally happy with landscape, portrait, still-life and the nude.

Of her Manchester cityscapes she says "Lowry's downcast crowds had little energy left to note the elegance of the urban or the grace and symmetry of the functional. It was- and still is- up to the artist, to say, look here is beauty in the mediocre and the commonplace."
