Demystifying Detox...

Many people have pre-conceived ideas about colonic hydrotherapy and colonic irrigation and imagine the worst, whereas it is in fact a colonic treatment which leaves you feeling clean, revitalised and well. Lisa Asquith, owner of Didsbury Beauty Clinic, answers your questions to help demystify the detox process...

What can Colonic Hydrotherapy help with?

Constipation, IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), colitis, headaches, abdominal bloating, flatulence, haemorrhoids, skin problems [acne, eczema, psoriasis], fatigue, spastic colon, allergies and candida (yeast infection).

Is colonic Hydrotherapy safe?

Colonic Hydrotherapy is a very safe, effective method for cleansing the colon of waste material. It uses sterilised equipment and filtered water. It is conducted by a highly trained and qualified therapist.

What is involved in a Colonic Hydrotherapy procedure?

Filtered water, at a regulated temperature, is introduced under gentle pressure through the rectum and into the colon. The therapist will use special massage techniques as water begins to soften and cleanse the colon of faecal matter which are then piped away with the waste water. The therapist will work round the structure of the colon allowing the water to flow in and release the waste material.

Can I drive/work immediately after a Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment?

From my experience, I would suggest that your first Colonic treatment is not done in, for example, your lunch hour It is not a treatment that can be rushed and many people are nervous prior to their initial treatment. I would therefore recommend that you have a first treatment on an non-working day or at the end of a working day.

However, every client is different and will experience different feelings during and after the treatment, so there are no hard and fast rules. After your initial treatment, you can decide for yourself whether you want to have subsequent treatments during your lunch hour or indeed go back to work. As for driving, there should be no problems - just bring along a small bottle of water with you for your journey home.

What are the differences between enemas and colonics?

Enemas are useful for emptying the rectum (the lowest 8-12 inches of the colon) and ususally 1 or 2 pints of water are used to do that. However, without question, the rolls royce of colon cleansing without question is colonic hydrotherapy, using up to 15 gallons of water is used to gently flush the colon.

Do you lose weight with a colonic hydrotherapy?

Maybe. Just bear in mind that you lose wastes only, not fat or cellulite. If you start eating less, increase your fibre intake, move more, chew better and drink more water, then you will achieve the weight loss.

What will I feel like after a colonic treatment?

Most likely you will feel great, you will probably feel lighter and enjoy a sense of well-being. Not infrequently someone having their first colonic treatment wil remark that it was one of the most wonderful experiences of their life. As soon as it is finished you can carry on with your daily routine. For some people you may experience several bowel movements on the day you have your treatment - this is completely normal and there will be no uncontrollable moments or discomfort. You may also experience a light-headed (or 'chilled' sensation) following the treatment.
