The Didsbury Good Life Community Grows...

We love a bit of real community based action. The whole point of Didsbury Life is to help grow an on & offline community. So, we are delighted that it’s all coming together in a very special way.

Our friend Ben, owner of Thyme Out Delicatessen on Nell Lane, approached us to discuss how he could best utilise his “secret garden” to the rear of the shop and to look into the possibilities of lending out the raised allotment beds. We were immediately interested because we’ve been dabbling with a bit of self-sufficiency this year, but have been hampered by lack of space. There are only so many potatoes, carrots and onions you can pack into a West Didsbury “courtyard” [Bridgfords, not us!] – so we jumped at the chance of an alloment space. Luckily, good friends also fancied a bit of the Good Life too, so a bit of an informal Community Garden Space has ben created.

Recently, we gathered at Thyme Out – but chats, catching up & good food had to happen before the back-breaking work could begin. Just as well Si had that garlic bread/banana milkshake combo just before digging out four fairly deep raised beds… With more than a little help from Lucy & Felix, we’d soon bagged the stones, raked the soil and laid fresh top soil – all ready for the first ceremonial planting!

None of us, Ben included, are sure how this will go. However, we all believe that it can’t NOT work. A group of determined friends, some lovely children who want to be involved, an innovative & forward thinking business owner. How can it not work?

So, the plan is for us to dig, plant, nurture – then harvest and share. Along the way, we know we’ll make some mistakes, but, we’ve already line up some experts who can dispense advice. And do you know what? At least we’ll have tried. At least we know that Thyme Out Delicatessen is more than worthy of the title of Deli of the Year for which it’s been nominated. And, at least we’ll be enjoying some quality time with good friends and their children, getting back to nature…
