The Metropolitan, once a Victorian railway hotel, has been described as a ‘titan of a pub’, ‘spacious and sprawling, huge and airy’.
In reality the ‘Met’ as it is known locally, although large, is not huge by modern day standards. Rather it is an eclectic collection of smaller spaces each with its own identity and ambience. From the Red Room to the Library and the Snug to the Conservatory, there is a space to suit each and every visitor.
Granted, the bar with its 20 metre span and 5 metre high wall of wines and malt whiskies, only reached by means of a ladder, is impressive. But even this, broken up into sections by the massive columns that support the building, provides a sense of space within a space.
In the ten years since the ‘Met’ first opened its doors, the pub has grown with the community, providing the well-travelled residents of the area with a ‘local’ comparable to anything in the country.
At the ‘Met’ the food has gained national acclaim, voted for the third year running as ‘amongst the best Sunday lunch in the north west’ by Observer magazine readers and also featuring in the top 150 Gastro pubs in the country.
The beer’s not bad either with Timmy Taylor’s ‘Landlord’ and Caledonian Deuchars IPA on draught. Various continental lagers from the Czech republic, Germany and Belgium, real cloudy cider and, of course, the ever present, Guinness Extra Cold all on tap.
Add to all this an outdoor facility second to none, an al fresco bar, with cover, heating and comfortable seating, plus an attendant to look after your car... What are you waiting for?
