The Violet Hour is a new independent neighbourhood bar sitting in the heart of West Didsbury on Burton Road. Occupying the old Hibbert’s butcher’s shop, we loved this unusual site the moment we saw it, despite the completely derelict state it was in! It’s undergone a complete renovation, and with its different floors and cosy snug areas we saw a great opportunity to restore the building to its former glory and create a real focal point in the community.
During the day The Violet Hour will be a relaxing place to have a coffee, read the newspapers, use the WIFI and enjoy some delicious and carefully prepared foods. You’ll be able to choose from continental cheeses and breads, cured meats and deli salads, all served on rustic boards.
We’ve taken inspiration for our bar from the illicit drinking dens and secret speakeasies of Prohibition-era USA, a time of real social explosion where high-quality drinks and a relaxed, intimate environment were the order of the day. This is particularly evident in the drinks we’re bringing to you. As well as fantastic wines and champagnes and a diverse selection of both British and imported beers, we offer both classic cocktails and our signature versions of classics. We’re priding ourselves on the quality and authenticity of our drinks, and will be experimenting with home-made syrups and infusions which we hope will make them that little bit special.
There are plenty of deep leather sofas and vintage Chesterfields for you to settle down in, and all of this with a killer soundtrack in the background to really set the mood.
Our friendly team very much look forward to welcoming the good people of West Didsbury and beyond, making sure you have a great and memorable experience - day or night - when you visit.
Oh, and for anyone wondering about the origins of our name, a chap named Bernard DeVoto wrote a cocktail manifesto called “The Hour” back in the 50s and he had this to say - “This is the violet hour, the hour of hush and wonder, when the affections grow and valor is reborn.”
