August Events at The Albert Club, West Didsbury
Don't despair if you're in Manchester when everyone else is on holiday. In fact, you're actually the lucky ones as we've got plenty on at the The Albert Club. So, who needs The Algarve?
Monday 2nd August
August kicks off with Jazz, with Jazz OD plus special guests providing brilliant music. Tim France on sax, James Adolfo on bass and the coincidentally named Tim Franks on drums, with Alexandra Lennon on vocals. Starting at 8.30pm £2 members, £3 visitors & £1 concessions. A grat night for people suffering Manchester Jazz Festival withdrawal symptoms!
Thursday 5th August
The Abert Club is going to the dogs - literally! This is your last chance to pay your £5 deposit by Friday 30th August. For your £16 you get 2 x drinks vouchers, 2 x 2 bet, 2 x 1 Jackpot bet, £5 fast food voucher and a return admission within 12 months. [Belle Vue Dog Track].
Sunday 8th August
Polish up those visors for Cool Hand Ryan's Poker Night, the coolest Poker Night in town... Always popular - £7.50 in and prompt 7.30pm start.
Wednesday 11th August - "It's all Greek to me"
Club member John Dwyer, for 10 years a tutor and editor with the Plain English Campaign, gives a tongue-in-cheek talk on the continuing battle between straight language and gobbledegook.
Examples include the advert for an 'ambient replenishment controller' (shelf stacker) and the barrister's assurance that 'res ipsa loquitur' (the facts speak for themselves). Entertaining and informative and free and open to all. Begins at 7pm.
Saturday 14th August
Charity Fundraiser "5Bs for a Fiver - Bar, Barbecue, Bands, Bowling and Boogie". The tennis section is organising an evening in memory of Hayley York, mum of two small children and an Albert tennis member who died so tragically of cancer. Sunday 15th August : Fun Quiz and Food
Mike's usual gripping mixture of pictures, music, questions, anagrams, cryptic clues and surprises that make up the Sunday Quiz. Teams of 6 or less- members £2, visitors £3, Chilli £2.50
