A Message from Cavendish Primary School
UPDATED REPORT FROM SOUTH MANCHESTER REPORTER :
"Pupils managed to wrap a politician round their little fingers. The youngsters at Cavendish Road Primary gave a huge scarf to John Leech MP, who is also a governor of the school. He offered to take it to London to give to Prime Minister David Cameron, as part of a national petition on education.
The West Didsbury children each decorated a sheet of paper on a footballing theme and the pieces were joined together to make the 120-metre scarf. The pupils also signed the scarf and persuaded their friends and families to add their names, to reach a total of around 1,500 signatures.
The idea was dreamt up by charity ActionAid, whose 1 Goal campaign aims to remind world leaders of their pledge five years ago that every child should get a primary education. It is thought that nearly half of the 72 million children worldwide who don't go to school live in Africa, and the idea to make a football-type scarf was decided because of the World Cup taking place in South Africa.
Janet Marland, headteacher at Cavendish Road Primary, said: "They really enjoyed decorating their bits of paper and making the scarf. "We had everything from blue and white stripes for Manchester City to country flags."

At Cavendish Primary, we really enjoyed watching the World Cup and we even watched a match in school, but it made us sad to learn that 75 million children around the world don't get any education at all, and almost half of these children live in Africa.
Then we found out that, 10 years ago, world leaders promised that all children will have a primary education by 2015. There are only 5 years left for them to keep their promise.
We wanted to remind the politicians of their pledge to children throughout the world so we joined the Action Aid 1 Goal campaign. We have made a petition in the form of a HUGE football scarf.
This Friday, John Leech MP is coming to collect our petition and he will take it back to Westminster to give to the coalition Prime Minister David Cameron. We hope that Mr. Cameron will take our message to world leaders and make sure that they keep their promise!
